Egg Donation Explained

Egg donation offers a path to parenthood for those diagnosed with a specific type of infertility in which they don’t produce their own eggs or don’t have any viable eggs for fertilization. Through egg donation, a woman provides their egg to a couple or individual to help them grow their family. Along with IVF, it’s possible to use donor eggs to conceive and carry a baby.

What’s Involved in Egg Donation?

The egg donor can be anonymous or someone the couple or individual knows, either a friend or family member (not genetically related to the biological father). Using a donor egg makes it possible for you to conceive and carry a child through IVF. You can grow your family, just as you wish, even though, for any number of reasons, you don’t produce eggs or your eggs are not usable

The woman donating their egg undergoes ovarian stimulation to mature several eggs at one time. Once the eggs are mature, a doctor harvests them through a procedure known as egg retrieval.

Once the doctor retrieves the eggs, the lab inspects them to look for any issues. Next, the lab fertilizes the egg(s) using the male partner’s sperm. Once the embryos develop, they’re ready for implantation in the female partner’s uterus, or the uterus of a genetic carrier/surrogate.

 Reasons to Use Donor Eggs

Couples and individuals use donor eggs for IVF for many different reasons. This may be because of a medical condition that interferes with egg quantity or the quality of the eggs, to avoid passing on a genetic condition, in the case of same-sex male couples, or a single man who desires a child. Here, we take a deeper dive into some of the most common reasons couples and individuals choose to use donated eggs.

  • Advanced Maternal Age: As a woman ages their egg quality and quantity begin dropping off. This is especially true after age 40.

  • Failed IVF: For those who’ve attempted IVF but were not successful because of poor egg quality or poor embryo quality, donor eggs offer an option. Because these eggs come from young and healthy women, the odds for successful IVF go up.

  • Genetic Conditions: For those who carry a serious or life-threatening genetic disorder, egg donation provides an opportunity to grow your family without passing on the condition.

  • Ovarian Failure or Diminished Ovarian Reserve: Some women can’t produce healthy eggs because they’ve gone through premature menopause, either naturally or as a side effect of treatment for a medical condition like cancer, for example. Some women experience a diminished ovarian reserve as a result of endometriosis, fallopian tube disease, or scar tissue.

  • Chemotherapy and Radiation: These two life-saving treatments for diseases like cancer may damage your ovaries and prevent you from producing quality eggs. Egg donation provides a path to parenthood.

  • Recurrent Pregnancy Loss: For those with a history of multiple miscarriages due to chromosomal abnormalities, egg donation may help you experience a successful pregnancy outcome.

  • Single Men and Same-Sex Male Couples: Egg donation and a gestational carrier/surrogate allow single men and same-sex male couples an opportunity to grow their own family.
