Success Rate Statistics of IVF

by - 11.07.2018 | In Vitro Fertilization

IVF, just as any fertility treatment, is highly influenced by individual circumstances for success. What may work for one individual, or couple, may not work for another. Although the basic processes are the same, harvesting eggs and sperm, fertilization in a laboratory setting, implantation of embryo(s), or freezing for later use, there are many factors which may differ, and impact the outcome.

Given the differences and uniqueness of each IVF case, it’s hard to know just how successful you may be. However, when a center reports a high rate of success among their IVF patients, you can pretty much assume the medical staff is dedicated to helping couples, and individuals, achieve a positive outcome; a healthy baby.

Dedication and Support for Your Success

LA IVF is among the most dedicated IVF centers in the country. Under the expertise of Dr. Aykut Bayrak, LA IVF performs cutting edge procedures, with a compassionate and understanding approach. Our IVF, and other fertility treatments, are geared toward your needs, as distinctive and unique as they may be. Although every IVF cycle outcome, just like all fertility treatments, is dependent upon individual circumstances, it is with great pride that LA IVF can report an excellent rate of success in IVF procedures.

How Statistics Are Influenced

While it’s obvious that many different factors come into play which will help you determine your success, don’t let any of these situations discourage you. There are some things you can do to improve your odds, and factors which are within your control, and others that may call on changing our approach. The positive news is that every day, in fertility treatment, there are new and exciting methods and technologies being uncovered.

If you’re seeking IVF due to certain fertility issues, it’s essential to understand these particular issues and how they impact your journey ahead. Some of these fertility hurdles are much more responsive than others, in dealing with IVF. These include:

  • Blockage in the fallopian tubes
  • Ovulation concerns
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine abnormalities
  • Fibroids
  • Dysfunction of the ovaries
  • Long term infertility
  • Dual infertility
  • Low sperm count

Other factors which play a role in successful IVF are:

  • Age of both mother and father
  • Previous pregnancies and success
  • Lifestyle
  • Opting for donor eggs or sperm

Factors You Can’t Control

Maternal age, perhaps the greatest factor, is something that you can’t really overcome. When you’re born you have a certain amount of eggs in your ovaries. After puberty you begin ovulating every month and egg reserve declines over time. The fertility rates start declining by age 32 and become more significant after 38. Above the age of 46, success rates with any fertility treatment decline to single digits.

Alternative options such as using donated eggs almost always results in high success rates regardless of reproductive age. Such rates are almost above 50% per embryo transfer and in some circumstances may be up to 80% per cycle.

IVF statistics for live birth rate, by age;

  • 40-60% for maternal age under 35
  • 30-40% for maternal age of 35-37
  • 10-20% for maternal age of 40-44
  • Less than 10% for maternal age above 45

Improved Success Using Donor Eggs or Sperm

Of course, if you’re concerned about your age preventing your successful IVF, there is always an opportunity for you to use donor eggs, or sperm, to help you improve your odds. This is called third party reproduction, a term which also includes using a surrogate. However, here we will discuss the success rates as they pertain to donor egg and sperm.

The success rates for donor eggs are far above the rates for regular IVF. This is due, in large part, to the quality of the eggs. Donor eggs are typically harvested from young women, who are not dealing with fertility issues themselves. Other risks associated with age, such as chromosomal abnormalities, and increased risk of miscarriage, are usually not an issue when donor eggs are used.

The success rate for IVF when using donor sperm, due to the absence of a partner, or a partner’s low sperm count, is also much higher.

Hope for Fertility Issues

For those individuals and couples who are dealing with fertility stumbling blocks, there is hope. Dr. Bayrak and his staff at LA IVF provide the support you need to look toward a positive outcome, and realize your goal of becoming a family.
