Finding the right IVF doctor for you and your partner is easy once you know what to look for. However, not all IVF doctors and clinics are the same, so bear that in mind when you begin your search. Some doctors maintain certification in reproductive endocrinology and specialize in infertility. Others do not. Some clinics tend to offer more resources you need when going through your IVF cycle.

As you may realize, there’s much to consider when looking for the ideal IVF doctor to guide you on your journey to parenthood. Some factors seem obvious and others, not so much. Here, we offer our tips for finding the right IVF doctor.

Where to Begin

Some couples begin looking for a doctor as soon as they suspect possible fertility issues. Others want a new perspective, perhaps following a few failed attempts at IVF or other infertility treatments. Whatever brings you to the task of finding the right IVF doctor you must begin somewhere.

Your OB-GYN is one valuable resource and a great place to start before starting IVF. Other sources include friends and family and, of course, the internet. When you search online for the right IVF doctor, you have the advantage of combing through other patients’ reviews. Just make sure you look for a trend in these reviews before taking any of them too seriously. Just because a patient felt the receptionist was impolite or the doctor seemed rushed doesn’t give you any insight into the quality of care the clinic provides.

Take your time and utilize whatever you have at your disposal. Very often, you’ll find the same name coming up again and again. Here are some of the factors we encourage you to look for when finding the right IVF doctor.

Review the Doctors’ Qualifications

Doctors who have the highest level of training in OB-GYN as well as Reproductive Endocrinology are double-board-certified with a robust level of experience generally also have a proven track record and high success rates. When it comes to infertility diagnoses, every case is unique. A doctor who brings both experience and qualifications to the table understands there is no “one size fits all” approach. This is a major consideration when finding the right IVF doctor.

Does the Clinic Have More than One Location?

When a clinic has more than one location, they typically offer more resources. Larger clinics may have onsite or affiliated labs, nutritionists, acupuncture, counseling, and support groups. You’ll also find the larger practices maintain a team of doctors and clinicians, so it’s easier to schedule an appointment at a convenient time. And with more than one location it’s usually easier to find a clinic convenient to your work or home.

Success Rates

Obviously, as we stated above, each infertility diagnosis is unique, and the right IVF doctor customizes their approach to your unique situation. That being said, the right IVF doctor has no issues publishing their success rates. A clinic that embraces transparency and shares results with potential patients is worthy of your time.

Testing

A big part of IVF success lies in the diagnostic testing. The right IVF doctor takes time for in-depth assessment of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries. They measure hormone levels and other blood work before beginning any treatment or IVF cycle.

Genetic carrier screening is another important test your doctor considers before jumping into treatment. Your doctor typically performs this test as part of your initial work-up. If you or your partner know of a genetic condition such as Tay-Sachs, sickle cell anemia, or cystic fibrosis in your family, your doctor performs a genetic carrier screening. This test confirms any genetic mutations that may pass on to your future child.

The right IVF doctor may recommend preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) in some cases. This test examines the embryos for any defects that may result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth defects by uncovering chromosomal abnormalities. Through PGT the embryologist identifies the healthy embryos for implantation into your uterus.

The Right Fertility Doctor is Also Involved in Research and Education

Has the IVF doctor published any medical papers or research? Do they offer online sessions that help educate patients about infertility and treatments? Are they active in outreach and community endeavors? This demonstrates a doctor and clinic who take their mission seriously. A doctor who publishes, researches, and educates is passionate about their patients and their professional career. The clinic takes its cue from the doctor, so that tells you the team has integrity and compassion.
