NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS FOR FERTILITY
Prenatal vitamins are recommended to all women trying to conceive. The most important component of the supplement is folic acid (folate) which is present in all prenatal vitamins. Some of the multi-vitamins may contain very high doses of vitamin A, which may be harmful to the developing fetus. Therefore, switching to a prenatal vitamin prior to conception is ideal. Prenatal vitamins should be started 2-3 months prior to a planned pregnancy for best outcomes. The best way to supplement vitamins and minerals in the body is through a well balanced diet and by consuming plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruits.
In men with poor sperm parameters, supplementation with vitamins and anti-oxidants has been recommended. In some cases, sperm quantity and quality are improved significantly, but in others benefit may be minimal, especially in men with severe sperm abnormalities.
